Botswana National Stadium is the country's main multi-purpose sports venue, sitting in Gaborone as one of the most important sporting facilities in the nation. Built in 1965 and opened the following year, it has gone through several rounds of renovation, most notably in 2016 when its stands were joined together ahead of Botswana's 50th independence celebrations. That renovation work lifted capacity to around 25,000 spectators, making it the country's second largest stadium after Francistown's newer arena.
The stadium is home to the Zebras, Botswana's national football team, and also hosts Premier League club Township Rollers. Football is the main event here, with World Cup qualifiers, Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and COSAFA Cup matches all having passed through its gates. Beyond football, the venue caters to athletics meets, rugby fixtures and school sports days, and it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2014 African Youth Games.
Facilities include a grass pitch ringed by an athletics track, ten grandstands with three covered, changing rooms and media space for broadcasters. There's also a tennis facility on site and a disused rugby ground. Owned by the Botswana National Sports Council, the stadium remains central to sport and public life in Gaborone.
